Cross Country Round-up: Salem Invitational

September 15 - Guilford's cross country teams traveled to Winston-Salem, N.C., last Saturday for the Salem College Invitational.  We finally had some nice running weather with cooler temperatures and a soft course following our first substantial rain in months.  Half of the team did not race this weekend and helped run a high school meet at Hagan Stone Park.  While this half of the team did not race, they ran a workout after the high school meet to get in another quality day of running.

The meet was a five-kilometer run for both the men and the women.  Due to its small size, the men and women ran together.  The course was a nice spectator course, with the runners completing three loops around the grounds of Salem.  At the gun, the men’s team surged to the front of the pack and took the lead.  Marc Ramsay and Tyler Brown led the team through the first mile, followed by Nico de la Vega Billingsely, Chad Currin and Reid CranfilEmily Frenzel, Johanna Naradzay, and Liz Chandler passed the first mile within 10 seconds of each other.  Emily Querin, Rachel Dede, Dana Small, and Naomi Lewis completed the women’s team.  After the first mile, Marc began to pull away and ran to victory by 40 seconds. Tyler, Nico, and Chad followed finishing second, third and fourth, respectively.  Reid Cranfill placed seventh overall to complete the men’s team.  Emily, Johanna, and Liz stayed together through the race, with Johanna finishing first for the Quakers, and 10th overall.  Emily and Liz were 11th and 13th, respectively, some 10 seconds behind Johanna.  Emily Querin placed 16th in her best performance of the fall.  Rachel Dede finished 19th and Dana Small finished 21st.  Unfortunately, Naomi was directed the wrong way after the first mile and was unable to complete the course.

Guilford's women placed third overall, behind Salem and Meredith College.  The men’s team won the meet, defeating Jefferson College of Health Science handily.

The Quakers will host and compete in the Old North State Invitational at Hagan Stone Park this Saturday.  This meet will serve as the state championship for NCAA Division II and III schools.  The women will run another six-kilometer race at 10:00 a.m. with the men running at 10:45.  Last year the men’s team placed third overall while the women finished fourth.  Both teams won the Division III competition last year and look to repeat again this year.
