NIKA BOTKIN NAMED GUILFORD STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Greensboro, NC (3/20/06) -- With two victories in three first-singles matches and two wins in three first-doubles matches, freshman Nika Botkin earned Guilford College's Student-Athlete of the Week Award Monday. Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) sponsors the weekly award, which includes competition from Mar. 13-19.
Botkin
won four overall matches for the Quakers, who went 2-1 in three league contests
last week. After starting the week with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to regionally ranked
Kristen McClung of Washington and Lee, she notched her first Old Dominion
Athletic Conference (ODAC) win of the year with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over
Lynchburg's Marin Brown Mar. 18. Botkin teamed with Krystal Parrish
to win the first-doubles match against Lynchburg's Brown and Kelly Sinnen, 8-6.
The wins helped Guilford pull out a 5-4 road triumph. The following day
Botkin rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 victory over Jenna Nacht of
Randolph-Macon Woman's College. Botkin and Parrish downed the
Wildcats' Nacht and Ellen Barnes, 8-3, in first doubles. Guilford defeated
Randolph-Macon Woman's College, 9-0.
Botkin raised her overall singles record to 5-6 with her 2-1 week and shares second place on the team with five singles victories. She is 3-5 in dual matches, 2-3 against ODAC foes. Botkin's overall doubles mark stands at 6-6, 3-5 in dual matches. Her six doubles wins also stand second on the team.
Coach Jenn Anderson's Quakers are 6-2 (3-2 ODAC), their best start since 1997. The team is one win away from matching its win total of a year ago. Guilford returns to action March 24 against visiting Peace in a nonconference match beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Other recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
