NGUYEN WINS GUILFORD STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK AWARD
Greensboro, NC (4/24/06) -- Senior Song an Nguyen received Guilford College's Student-Athlete of the Week Award Monday after helping the Quakers' women's tennis team to its best Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship finish since 1998. The weekly prize is presented by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and includes competition from April 17-23.
Nguyen
(pronounced WINN) earned All-ODAC Tournament honors in singles and doubles by
virtue of her third-place finish in the third singles and third doubles flights.
She earned the tournament's number-three seed at third singles and advanced to
the semifinals with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan's Caroline Place, the
sixth seed. Nguyen fell to ODAC Rookie of the Year Maggie Bai of Hollins
in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-0, but knocked off fifth-seeded Stacie Blevins of
Emory & Henry, 9-7, in Sunday's third-place match. Teamed with sophomore Joan
Kietzman at third doubles, Nguyen reached the tourney semifinals
before losing to Washington and Lee's top-seeded tandem of Emily Applegate and
Rebecca Timmis, 8-1. Nguyen and Kietzman, the fourth seed, upended
Virginia Wesleyan's third-seeded pair of Jess Burns and Santiera Brown, 8-4, in
the Sunday's final match of the three-day tournament to win third place.
Nguyen concludes her season with a team-best 17-4 overall singles record. She and Kietzman went 14-4 at third doubles this year, the best record of any Guilford tandem. Nguyen led the Quakers in overall wins for the third year in a row with 31 and concludes her career with a 49-17 singles record and a 34-25 doubles mark.
Coach Jenn Anderson's Quakers (10-5, 4-5 ODAC) recorded their most dual-match victories and highest ODAC Tournament finish since 1998. The performance landed Anderson the ODAC's Coach of the Year Award, a first for any Guilford women's tennis coach.
Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Other recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities, dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams and halftime promotions.
