Guilford College Tennis Courts

The 2009 season marks the start of a new era for Guilford tennis as the Quakers' men's and women's teams will play on new courts in a new location on campus. The Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael '37 Centennial Class courts were completed in the fall of 2008 on the northwest corner of Guilford's campus.
The tennis courts were funded by a gift of nearly $500,000 from Guilford trustee Dalton L. "Mac" McMichael and his wife, Susan. The six-court complex also has a restroom and storage facility. Four existing tennis courts next to Alumni Gym were renovated for recreational use. The other four existing courts were removed to create green space.
The McMichael gift is in memory of Mac’s mother, Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael, who graduated in the centennial class. Her sister, Ruth Burton, and three nieces also graduated from the college.
Mac McMichael has served as a Guilford trustee since 1994. He is president of McMichael Mills Inc. of Madison, N.C., manufacturers of elastic yarns.
In addition to the tennis courts, Guilford's tennis team use the facilities of the Physical Education Center. In addition to the Ragan-Brown Field House, the P.E. Center houses a 25-meter, six-lane pool, locker room facilities, team rooms, and a fully equipped training room. The college upgraded the facility's training room and weight room in 2004 to the tune of approximately $131,000.
