Guilford Falls at Sweet Briar In ODAC Swimming Opener
SWEET BRIAR, Va. (10/30/09) -- Sweet Briar College defeated visiting Guilford College, 151-42, in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women’s swimming opener for both teams.
The Vixens (1-0, 1-0 ODAC) swept all 11 races from Guilford (0-1, 0-1 ODAC). Sweet Briar’s 400-meter freestyle relay team broke a 26-year-old school record with a winning time of 4:15.42, which also set a new pool standard.
Sweet Briar senior Tori Marshall swam the lead leg of the 400 free relay and took first in the 200 and 400 freestyle events. Junior Melissa Simpson also won two races (200 individual medley, 100 backstroke) and anchored Sweet Briar’s victorious 200 freestyle relay squad. Rookie Dani Humphrey swam on both relays and won the 50 freestyle.
Guilford senior Justine Merritt placed second in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke to highlight the Quakers' top performances. Junior Kelsey Albert placed second in the 400 freestyle for the Quakers.
Guilford returns to action next Saturday (11/7) at Randolph College in a 2:00 p.m. ODAC tri-meet with Hollins University.
