Guilford Downs Emory & Henry, 113-32, in ODAC Meet
GREENSBORO, N.C. (01/30/08) - Justine Merritt and Julia Hohn won two events apiece in Guilford College's 113-32 Old Dominion Athletic (ODAC) Conference swimming victory over Emory & Henry College Wednesday afternoon.
The Quakers recorded their school-record seventh win of the season and improve to 7-4 on the year, 3-2 in the ODAC. Emory & Henry drops to 0-7-1, 0-5 in the ODAC.
Guilford won handily in part to a depleted Wasps' roster that featured five swimmers. Quakers swam alone or against other teammates in eight of the 14 events. Guilford contestants swam exhibitions in the final five events, which means their place did not affect the scoring.
Hohn was the lone competitor in both backstroke races. Merritt defeated teammates Amanda Oehlert and Sara Waitsman to win the 200-meter freestyle and edged Emory & Henry's Virginia Lamb to win the 50 freestyle.
The Quakers' 400 medley relay swam alone in a season-low 5:30.42, which is the third fastest time in school history.
Guilford concludes its dual-meet schedule Feb. 9 in an ODAC tri-meet with Washington and Lee University and Hollins University. The Wasps return to action Feb.2 in a four-team ODAC meet at Bridgewater College.
