Merritt Named Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week

Greensboro, N.C. (11/14/06) -- Freshman Justine Merritt won the Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award for the week ending Nov. 12. The weekly prize is presented by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Merritt, a member of the Quakers' swimming team, broke two school records in Guilford's double-dual meet with Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rivals Washington and Lee and Randolph-Macon Nov. 10. She placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke in a record-breaking time of 2:45.33 and also took third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.46. Merritt swam to a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:30.04 against both teams and completed the second leg for Guilford's 200 freestyle relay team. In Guilford's Nov. 4 victory over Hollins, she won the 200 individual medley and placed second in the 100 breaststroke.

Coach Steve Kaczmarek's Quakers (1-2, 1-2 ODAC) visit Greensboro College Saturday for a tri-meet with ODAC-rival Randolph-Macon Woman's College at 1:00 p.m. Guilford hosts Emory & Henry in an ODAC match Sunday at 11:00 a.m.

Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
