Guilford Downs Salem, 118-74
Greensboro, N.C. (02/09/07) -- Freshman Justine Merritt won two events and swam on Guilford's winning 100-medley relay team to help the host Quakers past Salem, 118-74, in both teams' final dual meet of the year Friday. The Quakers (3-6) won five individual events and all three relays in the sprint meet. Salem ends its dual season with a 1-15 record.
Merritt won the 100-meter medley (1:16.06 ) and 50-meter freestyle (31.23). She joined Melissa Narro, Amanda Oehlert and Kate Talbot on Guilford's A team in the 100-medley relay, which the Quakers won in a time of 1:10.85. Talbot, one of three seniors making their final home appearance Friday night, won the 200-meter freestyle in 2:46.55, just over 16 seconds faster than her nearest competitor.
Rachel Fichthorn won the 50-meter freestyle (31.23) and the 50-meter backstroke (37.71) for the Spirits. Kayla Stover won the 50-meter breaststroke in 42.35.
Guilford's Maddie Winters outdistanced four competitors to win the 100-meter freestyle in 1:09.03. She also anchored the Quakers' victorious 100- and 200-meter relay squads. Sarah Park's 14.92 in the 25-meter freestyle marked Guilford's fifth individual victory. She also swam on the winning 100-meter freestyle relay team.
Guilford and Salem will meet again Feb. 16-18 at the Atlantic States/Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships in Radford, Va.
