Guilford Defeats Spelman, 3-1
Atlanta, Ga. (8/30/08) -- Guilford College evened its record at 1-1 Saturday night with a 3-1 nonconference women's soccer victory over Spelman College. Senior Amanda Sperr, freshman Lauren Matthews and junior Jordan Miller tallied for the Quakers.
Matthews opened the scoring 12:40 into the match with her first college goal, which was assisted by senior Erin Baker. Sperr doubled Guilford's advantage less than 13 minutes later off an assist from sophomore Kristyn Melanson. The score remained 2-0 at halftime.
Spelman's Danielle Stallings got the Jaguars (0-2) on the board midway through the second half, but Miller found the back of the net with just under 13 minutes remaining to seal the win.
Senior Amber Stapler made three saves in goal for the Quakers, who outshot Spelman, 12-6.
Guilford returns to action Sept. 6-7 at the Shellenberger Classic, hosted by Lynchburg College.
