Guilford's Zych Lands Weekly Soccer Honors

Veronica ZychGreensboro, N.C. (10/10/06) -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) selected Guilford College's Veronica Zych as its Women's Soccer Player of the Week Monday. Guilford's second winner of the league's weekly award, Zych totalled 22 saves and allowed one goal in the Quakers' 1-0-1 week. She matched her career high with 16 stops in Guilford's 0-0 double-overtime tie with league-rival Washington and Lee Oct. 4. The Generals tested Zych throughout the match, but she stood tall and made four saves in extra time to preserve her third shutout of the season, a career high. Zych made six stops and allowed a second-half goal in Guilford's 3-1 ODAC win at Randolph-Macon Oct. 8.

For the season, Zych has a 1.93 goals against average and .747 saves percentage. She has started all 13 Guilford matches and ranks fourth in the ODAC with 71 saves. As a team, the Quakers stand sixth in the conference with 1.85 goals allowed per match.

Coach Eric Lewis' Quakers (8-4-1, 6-1-1 ODAC) hold the top spot in the ODAC standings through matches of Oct. 9 with 19 points. Guilford was ranked sixth, a school record, in the Oct. 3 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas NCAA Division III South Region Rankings. The Quakers host Meredith Oct. 11 in a nonconference match at 4:00 p.m.

Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
