VIRGINIA WESLEYAN TABBED AS NUMBER-ONE SEED IN ODAC WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT
Quarterfinals Set For Saturday at Home Field of Higher Seeds
SALEM, VA (10/26/05) -- On
the strength of a 10-0-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) record, the
Virginia Wesleyan Marlins have earned the top-seed in the conference women's
soccer tournament which begins this weekend with four quarterfinal matches.
Virginia Wesleyan, which is ranked fourth
nationally in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
poll, will host Roanoke College in quarterfinal action Saturday. The Marlins are
led offensively by Sharon Hay who has a league-best 43 points on 20 goals and
three assists. The Maroons enter the tournament as the eighth seed after posting
an overall record of 6-8-3 and 4-6-1 in the league. RC is paced by Kristen
McCoy's 13 goals and two assists for 28 points.
Washington and Lee earned the second seed with a
9-0-2 ODAC mark and finished 12-1-3 overall. The Generals, who have not suffered
a loss in 14 matches, are led offensively by Anne Wiltshire's 30 points (12 g, 6
a). W&L will take on seventh-seeded Emory and Henry on Saturday in Lexington.
The Wasps earned a trip to the tournament with an ODAC record of 5-6 and a
10-7-1 overall.
Third-seeded Lynchburg will welcome sixth-seeded
Randolph-Macon on Saturday. LC closed out the regular season with a record of
9-2 in the ODAC and 13-3-2 overall. The Hornets surrendered just four goals this
season. RMC takes an overall record of 10-7 and 6-5 in the ODAC into the
tournament.
The Quakers of Guilford College are seeded fourth
and will host Eastern Mennonite in quarterfinal play. GC fashions a 12-5-2
overall mark and went 7-4-0 in league play. Jennah Carter leads the way
for Guilford with 20 goals and seven assists for 47 points. The Royals went
8-6-3 overall and 6-3-2 league to earn a spot in the tournament. Katie Lamm has
notched a team-leading 15 goals on the season for EMU.
Guilford outshot the Royals 8-2 earlier this year at home en route to a 1-0 victory. Sophomore Micki Boulineau scored the unassisted game-winning goal in the 73rd minute of the match to seal the win. The Quakers advanced to the semifinals of the 2004 ODAC soccer championships before falling to eventual champion Lynchburg.
