GUILFORD NAMES EMILY JOHNSON ASSISTANT WOMEN'S SOCCER COACH

(09/01/04) -- Emily Johnson joined Guilford College's athletic staff Wednesday as an
assistant women's soccer coach. She will work with the Quakers' goalkeepers
on third-year head coach Eric Lewis' staff.
Johnson earned Second Team All-America honors in 1993 as a
goaltender for Ithaca College and played on the Bombers' 1991 national
championship team. She earned Second Team Academic All-District I honors in 1994
and 1995 and ranks second among Ithaca's career goals against average leaders
(0.43). Her 37 career wins rank
third in school history, as do her 34 career shutouts.
Ithaca compiled a 67-10-13 record in Johnson's four seasons and
reached the NCAA Division III playoffs four times.
A native of Shutesbury, MA, Johnson received her bachelor's
degree in physical education teaching from Ithaca in 1995 and is pursuing her
master's degree in physical education from the State University of New York (SUNY)
at Cortland.
After graduating from Ithaca, Johnson assisted the women's
soccer team and taught in Cortland's physical education department from 1995-98.
She helped the Red Dragons to a 32-20-4 record in three seasons.
Following her tenure at Cortland, she spent a year as an assistant
women's soccer coach at Bentley College.
Johnson served as the head women's soccer coach at Ferrum College from
2000-02 and spent the past two seasons as an assistant women's soccer coach
and goalkeeper trainer at Greensboro College. The Pride compiled a 23-13-4
record in her two years.
Guilford opens the 2004 season tonight at Wofford. The Quakers face
Methodist in their home opener on September 8 at 4:00.
