No. 1 North Carolina Races Past Guilford, 9-0

CHAPEL HILL, NC (09/17/03) ­­  Forwards Anne Morrell and Heather O'Reilly each scored two goals and had one assist and striker Leea Murphy added four assists as the No. 1 North Carolina womenšs soccer team sped past Guilford 9-0 Wednesday night before 687 fans at Fetzer Field.  The Tar Heels scored all nine of their goals in a span of just 50:13 as UNC improved to 7-0 on the season.  Guilford is now 3-4.

UNC coach Anson Dorrance made liberal use of his bench as he played all 27 players in uniform in advance of Carolina's match against No. 3 UCLA Friday at 5 p.m. at Dukešs Koskinen Stadium in the Duke adidas Classic in Durham, N.C.

Carolina got on the board just 1:36 into the match as forward Mary McDowell scored her second goal of the season, taking a pass from Murphy, who was making her first career start, and beating Guilford goalkeeper Danielle Brisotti to the left side of the cage.  Less than five minutes later the Tar Heels made it 2-0 as Morrell one-timed a pass from Murphy into the left side of the goal to notch her second goal of the season.  Just 37 seconds later, it was suddenly 3-0 as freshman Elizabeth Guess, making her first career start, scored on a nifty set of passes initiated by Morrell and Murphy.  It was Guess' third goal of the season.

At 15:34, Murphy notched assist No. 4, just one short of the school record for assists in a game, as Morrell scored her second goal of the match and third of the year.  Freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Lancaster also had an assist on the goal as her punt went directly to Murphy who then fed Morrell for the goal.  UNC went on to score three more first-half goals.  Freshman Heather O'Reilly scored her first career goal at 30:52 as she took a cross from Lindsay Tarpley to score to Brisottišs left.  At 36:20, sophomore midfielder Kacey White finished off a nifty set of passes to score her first goal of the season, assisted by Tarpley and O'Reilly.  O'Reilly finished off the scoring in the first half with 1:04 left before intermission as she and Alyssa Ramsey staged a nifty give and go in the Guilford penalty area.

UNC came out to score twice more in the first seven minutes of the second half.  Leigh Blomgren, making her first career start, got her first goal of the season as she took a pass from McDowell to score at 46:03.  Guess finished off the scoring with a goal at 51:49  as she headed in a corner kick by Kendall Fletcher.

UNC outshot the Quakers 27-5 and had seven corner kicks to zero for Guilford.  Brisotti made six saves for Guilford while Aly Winget improved her record in goal to 7-0 for UNC.  Winget made three saves.
