Sooner or later, Lesley Oyen wasn't going to
be denied.
The
junior college transfer came through Wednesday with two second-half
goals as Methodist downed visiting in-state
rival Guilford, 2-0, at the Monarch Soccerplex. The victory was the
second straight for
Methodist, which evened its 2003 mark at 2-2. Guilford is now 1-3.
The
Quakers held Oyen, Methodist's leading scorer, in check throughout the
first half. However, she broke through in the 59th minute
with game's first goal in the 59th minute, a 17-yard strike
from the left side of the penalty box.
Clinging
to a 1-0 lead late in the game, Methodist dodged a bullet as
Kimberly Mullen's 22-yard shot off a corner kick hit the cross bar.
Oyen capitalized on the
break with a goal in the 89th minute to
seal the victory for Methodist.
Monarchs
goalkeeper Keri LaSalla recorded her first shutout of the season
with six saves, including five key saves in the first half.
Methodist
plays its first road game on Sunday at 2 p.m. at in-state rival
Meredith. Guilford visits Georgia for a two-day tournament hosted
by Agnes Scott College September 13-14.
