Women's Soccer Release - Hutton Earns Academic All-America Laurels - Guilford College
GUILFORD'S HUTTON NAMED FIRST TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
Greensboro, NC (11/26/02) -- Senior Alex Hutton (Collierville, TN/Hutchison School) became the first student-athlete at Guilford College to garner first-team Verizon Academic All-America (College Division) honors Tuesday. Amy Warner '90 was Guilford's first women's soccer player to earn Academic All-America honors when she was named a third-team GTE Academic All-America pick in 1990.
The College Division Academic All-America team is comprised of players from Division II, Division III, and NAIA institutions from across the country. Nominees were starters or important reserves of sophomore academic standing or above who maintained at least a 3.20 grade point average. Selections are made by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Playing
as both a defender and forward for the Quakers this season, Hutton
started in 20 of Guilford's 21 matches. Hutton earned first team All-Old
Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honors this year after winning second-team
honors in 2001. She enjoyed the finest offensive year of her career and ranked
second on the team in points, goals and assists. Her 34 points rank eighth in
Guilford history. Hutton scored 14 goals, including seven against Ferrum
September 25. Her seven-goal, 15-point performance in the match set the Guilford
and ODAC marks for points in a match. Her seven tallies rank second in NCAA
history (all divisions) and her 15 points mark the third-highest scoring game in
Division III history. She finished her career with 41 career points on 16 goals
and nine assists, which stands ninth on the Quakers' career scoring list.
A regular on Guilford's Student-Athlete Honor Roll, Hutton is a dean's list exercise and sport science major. She has maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout her college career. She is the recipient of one of Guilford's highly competitive Dana Scholarships for character, scholarship and leadership. Dana Scholars are chosen on the basis of their academic work, extracurricular activities, and community involvement. Hutton was also chosen as Guilford's 2001-2002 Outstanding Exercise & Sports Science Major.
Head coach Eric Lewis' Quakers ended the season with a 9-10-2 record, 4-6-1 in the ODAC. Guilford lost to Roanoke, 5-1, in the ODAC quarterfinals. This season's nine victories are the third most in Guilford College women's soccer history. Lewis expects 13 letter winners to return for the 2003 season.
