Late Flurry Lifts Mary Washington Past Guilford, 18-8
GREENSBORO, N.C. (2/15/09) - Catherine Kennedy scored four of her game-high six goals in the second half to carry visiting University of Mary Washington to an 18-8 win over Guilford College in Sunday's season opener for both teams. The Eagles improve to 5-0 all-time against Guilford.
Kennedy scored twice during a 5-0 Eagles' run that spanned both halves and opened a 9-2 lead for the visitors with 23:13 remaining in the game. The Quakers scored three straight goals and were trailing 11-7 with 15:13 to play before Mary Washington reeled off seven straight tallies to put the game away. Lauren Callison and Katie Wallis both scored twice during the Eagles' burst.
Callison finished with four goals and an assist and teammate Kaitlin Aquino also tallied four times. Wallis added two assists and finished with four points. Rookie Danni Guigli went the distance in goal with nine saves in her college debut.
Guilford's Sarah Bradburd scored three goals and an assist in her college lacrosse debut. Shelly Nogueira and Ellie Merritt both tallied twice and Alyzza May-Callahan made 12 saves in goal.
The Quakers return to action Saturday (2/21) against crosstown-rival Greensboro College at 3:00 p.m. in Guilford's Armfield Athletic Center.
