Ernst, Merritt Lead Guilford Past Frostburg State, 21-9

Carrie ErnstGREENSBORO, N.C. (3/17/09) - Carrie Ernst (left) and Ellie Merritt combined for 12 goals in Guilford College's 21-9 nonconference women's lacrosse win over visiting Frostburg State University Tuesday night.  Both students set career highs for goals and points in a match as the Quakers posted their second-highest scoring output in school history.

After the Bobcats' Meredith Martin opened the game's scoring, Ernst reeled off four consecutive goals and Merritt tallied her first of the game for a 5-1 Guilford lead just over 10 minutes into the contest.  Rachel Frank stopped the run for Frostburg State, but Guilford strung together the next eight straight tallies. Merritt scored four times during the 8-0 run and assisted on Summer Frazier's goal with 11:02 before halftime that gave the hosts a 13-2 edge. Frostburg rallied to score three of the next four goals, which made the score 14-5 at halftime.

Ellie MerrittErnst scored two more goals in the second half, during which time Guilford outscored Frostburg, 7-4. Ernst's seven goals rank third in Guilford history, while her nine points on the game stand fourth all-time. Merritt (right) notched four assists and also finished with a personal-best nine points.  Frazier and Sarah Bradburd both scored a career-high three goals for the Quakers. Alyzza May-Callahan registered 17 saves in goal, which matches her career high.

Joanna McIntire paced the Bobcats (2-4) with three goals and six ground balls. Elisabeth Hildebrand scored twice and had four ground balls and four draw controls for Frostburg. Erin Morrell and Tori Butts both played a half in goal, with Morrell making six of the team's nine saves in the first period.

Guilford hosts Roanoke College Friday (3/20) in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game at 4:00 p.m. The Bobcats are back in action Thursday (3/19) at Greensboro College.
