Guilford's Ernst Named Student-Athlete of the Week
Greensboro, N.C. (2/23/09) -- Junior Carrie Ernst of the women's lacrosse team won her first Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award Monday, and the first for the team this season. The weekly prize is presented by Guilford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Ernst, a 5-5 midfielder, netted three goals in the Quaker's Feb. 21 win over cross-town rival Greensboro College, including the game-winning score with 5:32 left to play. In the 16-15 victory, Ernst also accounted for six total shots, two ground balls and one draw control in addition to her hat-trick performance.
For the season, Ernst has three points on three goals, four ground balls, and four draw controls through two games.
Coach Matthew Grosso's Quakers (1-1) have a busy weekend ahead as they travel to Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday afternoon (2/28) for the team's first Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup of the season. Guilford plays a non-conference match Sunday (3/1) at Christopher Newport University.
The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among Guilford's student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a breast cancer awareness promotion, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
