Second Half Rally Lifts Guilford Over Marymount, 19-14

Alyzza-May CallahanGreensboro, N.C. (3/6/08) -- Sophomore goalkeeper Alyzza-May Callahan came off the bench to spark the defense and lift Guilford to a 19-14 come-from-behind nonconference victory over visiting Marymount University Thursday night in the Armfield Athletic Center. It was the women's lacrosse team's first ever home night game under the newly installed stadium lights on Appenzeller Field. Callahan's nine saves in the goal tied a career-high set last year in a win at Methodist.

The high-scoring first period featured four ties and saw the lead change hands three times with Marymount holding a three-goal advantage on three different occasions. Callahan came in at the 9:12 mark of the first half with Guilford trailing 9-6, and picked up three crucial saves to keep the game within reach. A Carolyn Rodda goal with 15 seconds left in the first half narrowed the Marymount lead to 11-10 going into halftime.

The Quakers' (1-3) defense stiffened in the second half making key stops and igniting the offense. Senior attacker Caryn Washington's unassisted goal started a decisive 8-1 Guilford stretch that turned a one-goal halftime deficit into a six-goal Quakers' advantage. Washington and classmate Mary Hutchins broke the game open scoring three and two goals respectively during the 24-minute run.

Nine different Quakers scored in the win led by the trio of Jennifer Abelin, Shelly Nogueira and Washington all registering hat-tricks for the home team. Hutchins and Carrie Ernst each added two goals and two assists in Guilford's first win of the season. Abelin also contributed a team-high eight ground balls, five draw controls and two caused turnovers.

The Saints (1-1) were led by SpringAnne Hatfield's game-high four goals and one assist. Sara Horne added three goals, while Ali Fulton, Marie Montgomery and Anna Sody chipped in two goals apiece in the losing effort. Sody also led Marymount with a team-high eight ground balls and a game-high 10 draw controls. Senior Elizabeth Hulfish went the distance in the goal and made 14 saves. Marymount was outshot 48-34 and was plagued by 26 turnovers, and eight failed clears.

The Quakers return to action Saturday (3/15) at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)-rival Lynchburg College. Marymount matches up with Capital Athletic Conference (CAC)-power Salisbury University Wednesday (3/12).
