#11 Mary Washington Defeats Guilford, 22-12, in Women's Lacrosse

Greensboro, N.C. (4/8/07) -- Senior Kaitlyn Barker scored a career-high eight goals and Caitlyn Erickson added a personal-best seven in the University of Mary Washington's 22-12 nonconference lacrosse win at Guilford College Sunday. The Eagles (11-3) are ranked 11th in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association NCAA Division III Poll.

Barker, who missed Mary Washington's school record by one, netted four goals in both halves. The Eagles scored the game's first six tallies and led 14-2 after Erickson netted her fifth goal of the game. The Quakers (6-7) netted the half's final three scores to make it a 14-5 game at halftime.

Guilford won three draws and scored three times in the opening minute of the second half against Eagles' backup goalie Helena Polites. With its lead reduced to 14-8, Mary Washington called a time-out and returned starting netminder Meredith Deitrick to the cage. Senior midfielder Meaghan O'Leary won the ensuing draw following the time-out and neither team scored for the next five minutes.

Mary Washington broke the second-half silence by scoring eight of the next nine goals and opened a 22-9 margin with 11:53 to play. Barker scored four times during the second-half outburst and O'Leary added a goal and two assists. Deitrick made six of her game-high 11 saves in the second half, several from close range.

Erickson, who added two assists, finished with a career-high nine points, one shy of Mary Washington's school record. O'Leary recorded seven points on two goals and a game-best five assists. She also won a game-high six draw controls, which helped the Eagles to a 20-16 edge in draws. Junior Amie Bruce scored twice for Mary Washington, which outshot Guilford, 40-28.

Junior Mary Hutchins paced Guilford's offense with five points on two goals and three assists. Junior Jordan Clodfelter, Caryn Washington, Shelly Nogueira and Ellie Merrit all scored twice for the Quakers. Freshman Jessica Bolton played the second half in goal and made four of Guilford's six saves.
