Guilford Women's Lacrosse Students Honored
Greensboro, N.C. (7/23/07) -- Two members of Guilford College's 2007 women's lacrosse team recently received special recognition for their performance on the field and in the classroom. Caryn Stone '07 earned a spot on the Jewish Sports Review's (JSR) 2007 Women's College All-America Lacrosse Team (Division III) released earlier this month. Rising senior Kelly Gonzalez was the Quakers' lone honoree on the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association's (IWLCA) 2007 Academic Honor Roll announced July 20. The IWLCA recognized 410 students representing 157 schools on this year's honor roll.
Stone, a defender, made JSR's All-America unit for the third year in a row. She earned her second straight Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honor in the spring. The team captain ended her career with a personal-best 15 points (5 goals, 10 assists) in 17 games. Her 39 ground balls ranked second on the team and she placed third with a career-high 20 caused turnovers. Stone, who played in last month's IWLCA North-South Senior All-Star Game, graduated as Guilford's career leader with 61 caused turnovers and ranked ninth with 132 career ground balls. She earned honorable mention All-ODAC recognition in 2004.
Gonzalez, a dean's list sports medicine major, earned Second Team All-ODAC honors and won Guilford's Coaches' Award this past spring. The defender returned from a season-ending injury in 2006 to start all 17 games in 2007. She ranked second on the squad with 21 caused turnovers and third with 37 ground balls. Her 23 draw controls stood fourth on the team and her 15 points (12 goals, 3 assists) represent a career high. Gonzalez ranked 13th among the ODAC's caused turnover leaders and 16th in ground balls. She ranks third in school history with 40 caused turnovers and has 23 career points (19 goals, 4 assists). Gonzalez has 95 ground balls, 39 draw controls, and 40 caused turnovers in 37 career games. She also has 19 goals and four assists.
Coach Matthew Grosso's Quakers posted an 8-9 overall record (4-4 ODAC )last spring. The team returned to the ODAC Tournament for the second straight season, but fell in the quarterfinals to Roanoke, 10-7. Grosso expects 12 letter winners, including Gonzalez, back for the 2008 campaign.
