Women's Lacrosse Earns First Win of Season Over Frostburg, 16-8

Mary HutchinsGreensboro, N.C. (3/11/07) -- Junior Mary Hutchins matched her career high with a game-best six goals in Guilford College's 16-8 nonconference lacrosse win over visiting Frostburg State University Sunday in the Armfield Athletic Center.


Hutchins and teammates Allison Brown and Jordan Clodfelter each scored twice during a decisive 9-0 Guilford run. Senior midfielder Billie Pellerito started the spurt by netting the final first-half goal to give the Quakers (1-3) an 8-7 halftime advantage. After the break, Guilford broke the game open with eight straight tallies over 23 minutes. Frostburg State's Elisabeth Hildebrand ended the run with a free-position shot with 3:35 remaining in the game.


Six different Quakers dent the twine in their first win of 2007. Clodfelter finished with a season-high five points on four goals and one assist. Brown tallied twice, as did junior Caryn Washington, who also added an assist. Freshman Jessica Bolton played 53 minutes in goal and recorded all of Guilford's four saves. Sophomore midfielder Jennifer Abelin contributed a goal and a game-high seven ground balls for the Quakers.


Hildebrand, Lindsay Lamont and Maria Schrum each recorded two goals and an assist for the Bobcats (0-2). Senior Rachel Lewis and sophomore Erin Morrell both played a half in goal and made five saves. The Bobcats were plagued by 30 turnovers, 14 in the second half, and 10 failed clears. Frostburg State played its season opener less than 24 hours earlier at Greensboro College.


The Quakers return to action Saturday (3/17) at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)-rival Virginia Wesleyan. Frostburg state plays SUNY Fredonia March 19 in West Palm Beach, Fla.
