Guilford Places Six on All-ODAC Women's Lacrosse Teams
Greensboro, N.C. (5/9/07) -- Guilford College's women's lacrosse team placed a school-record six students on the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) 2007 all-conference squads Wednesday. The league's head coaches made Guilford's Mary Hutchins and Jenn Abelin first-team selections. The Quakers' Jordan Clodfelter, Kelly Gonzalez and Caryn Stone earned second-team honors. Junior Caryn Washington received honorable mention laurels.

Hutchins, a 5-7 junior midfielder, led Guilford's scorers for the third straight year with 65 points on 40 goals and 25 assists. Her 65 points rank second in school history and her 3.82 points per game stand third among ODAC leaders. She set the school record with 25 assists and ranks fifth in the league with 1.47 helpers per game. Hutchins led Guilford's scorers in eight games, including the March 22 win over 2007 NCAA playoff participant College of Wooster where she scored a school record 11 points with seven goals and four assists. She moved into second place on Guilford's career scoring chart with 168 points in 47 games and set the school record with 63 career assists. The two-time all-region selection earned Second Team All-ODAC recognition in 2006.
Abelin, a 5-5 sophomore defender, led the Quakers with 61 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers. She ranked third among the league leaders in ground balls per game (3.81) and fifth in caused turnovers per game (1.56). Abelin contributed nine goals and an assist on offense and matched her career high with a team-best three goals in an April 7 setback to league-rival Roanoke. She picked up at least five ground balls in five games, including contests with Lynchburg and Frostburg State in which she had a team- and personal-best seven pickups. Abelin forced a career-high five turnovers in the season-opening loss to Lynchburg. Her 36 career caused turnovers stand fifth in school history.
Clodfelter, a 5-5 junior attack, finished second to Hutchins in scoring for the third straight season with a career-high 45 points on 31 goals and 14 assists. She ranked 11th among the ODAC's scoring and assists leaders and contributed 25 draw controls and 20 ground balls. Clodfelter scored a team-leading three game-winning goals, which ranks second in the league. In the Quakers' March 17 ODAC win over Bridgewater, she matched her career high with six points (5 goals, 1 assist). The contest marked one of four games in which she led Guilford's offense. Through 45 games, Clodfelter ranks seventh among the Quakers' career scoring leaders with 115 points and ranks fourth with 28 career assists. She was a Second Team All-ODAC pick in 2006 and an honorable mention selection in 2005.
Gonzalez, a 5-5 junior defender, returned from a season-ending injury in 2006 to start all 17 games in 2007. She ranked second on the squad with 21 caused turnovers and third with 37 ground balls. Her 23 draw controls stood fifth on the team and her 15 points (12 goals, 3 assists) represent a career high. Gonzalez ranks 10th among the ODAC's caused turnover leaders and 14th in ground balls. The team captain matched her personal best with two goals in four games and tallied a career-high three points ( 2 goals, 1 assist) in Guilford's March 15 league win over Randolph-Macon. She ranks third in school history with 40 career caused turnovers in 37 games and has 23 career points (19 goals, 4 assists).
Stone, a 5-5 senior defender, closed out her career with a personal-best 15 points (5 goals, 10 assists) in 17 games. She ranked second on the team with 39 ground balls and third with a career-high 20 caused turnovers. Stone caused four miscues and picked up five ground balls, both season highs, in the Quakers' March 24 ODAC win over Bridgewater. She also picked up five ground balls against league-rival Roanoke April 7 and scored twice in the Quakers' March 31 win over Randolph-Macon. The team captain leaves Guilford as the school's career leader with 61 caused turnovers and ranked ninth with 132 career ground balls. She was a 2006 Second Team All-ODAC selection and earned honorable mention in 2004.
Washington, a 6-0 attack, ranked fifth on the team with 25 points on a career-high 24 goals and one assist. She also contributed 28 ground balls, which stood fifth on the team. Washington dent the twine a career-high six times in Guilford's win over Wooster, one of her seven multiple-goal games. She scored three times in an April 11 league triumph over Sweet Briar. Through 47 career matches, Washington stands 14th on Guilford's all-time scoring list with 71 points (64 goals, 7 assists).
The students helped third-year coach Matthew Grosso's Quakers to their best season since 1999 (8-9). Guilford went 4-4 in league play and reached the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals before falling to 2007 NCAA playoff participant Roanoke, 10-7, April 24. The Quakers enjoyed a five-match winning streak that set the school's Division III record and matched the longest in school history. The streak started with a 20-12 win over Wooster and included a 15-10 over Randolph-Macon, the Quakers' first triumph over the Yellow Jackets in 10 years. Grosso expects 12 letter winners back for the 2008 season.
