GUILFORD'S HUTCHINS EARNS REGIONAL LACROSSE HONOR
Greensboro, NC (5/25/06) -- Guilford College sophomore Mary Hutchins
was selected to the 2006 Second Team All-Chesapeake Region squad unveiled by the
Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Thursday. Also a
2005 second-team all-region selection, Hutchins becomes Quakers' first
two-time all-region women's lacrosse student-athlete.
Hutchins, a midfielder, scored a team-high 52 points on 35 goals and 17 assists. The Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honoree ranked second with 46 ground balls and picked up a club-high 38 draw controls. Her 52 points were one more than her freshman total and Guilford's eighth-best season total. Hutchins' 35 goals rank ninth in school history and her 17 assists stand second only to her school-record 21 helpers in 2005. She places among the ODAC leaders in points (8th), assists (6th) and goals (10th) per game and led Guilford's scorers seven times.
Hutchins hit for a career- and game-high six goals in the Quakers' 13-10 season-opening win over crosstown-rival Greensboro. She had a pair of seven-point showings in victories over Hollins and North Carolina Wesleyan. Just 30 games into her career, Hutchins ranks second in Guilford history with 38 career assists and eighth with 103 career points.
Coach Matthew Grosso's Quakers posted a 5-11 overall record, 3-5 in the ODAC. The team returned to the ODAC Tournament this year after a one-year absence, but fell to Randolph-Macon in the opening round. With no seniors on the 2006 roster, Grosso expects all 16 letter winners back in 2007.
