Candidates for the Southeast Super region team
were selected by coaches' nominations from college teams in North Carolina,
South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and Alabama. The team features 16
players from NCAA Division I intercollegiate and varsity club programs, plus
Clodfelter and Hutchins. They are the first known Guilford
student-athletes to participate in the Women's Division National Tournament.
Clodfelter, a midfielder, ranked second on the team with 30 points on 24 goals and six assists. She was an honorable mention All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) selection in 2005 and added 22 ground balls and 17 draw controls over 12 contests. Clodfelter's game-high six points (3 goals, 3 assists) in the Quakers' win over Hollins marked a Guilford season high for points in a match. She tallied two or more goals in seven tilts, including a match- and career-best five tallies in a 13-9 setback to Roanoke. Clodfelter led or tied Guilford's scorers seven times and scored once in 11 of 12 contests.
Hutchins, an attacker, led the Quakers with 51 points on 30 goals and a Guilford-record 21 assists. The fifth-leading scorer in the ODAC, she ranked second on the team in draw controls (24) and fourth in ground balls (31). Hutchins scored four or more points in eight of 14 games, including a match- and career-best six goals in an 11-10 overtime victory over Greensboro in her first career game. Hutchins scored at least once in 13 of 14 contests and was Guilford's top scorer in 10 matches.
The Women's Division National Tournament began in 1933 to showcase the nation's best post-collegiate and club women's lacrosse players. Since that time, it has grown into one of the largest women's lacrosse events in the nation and features high school and club divisions. Post-collegiate and college players make up the club teams and are sorted by their US Lacrosse region. Approximately 25 teams are spread among four divisions. The Presidents Cup, which dates back to 1975, honors the winning teams from each division. In addition to the division championships, the tournament includes a U.S. National Team exhibition and a scholastic all-star game.
Clodfelter and Hutchins helped first-year head coach Matthew Grosso's squad to a 5-9 overall record (2-6 ODAC), which represents a one-win improvement over 2004. The Quakers lose no seniors to graduation from this year's club and look forward to returning 14 letter winners next spring.
