Women's Lacrosse Release (2004) - Game 05 - Guilford College
BENHAM LEADS SWEET BRIAR PAST GUILFORD, 7-5Greensboro, NC (03/29/04) -- Senior Anne Benham (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands) scored three goals and added an assist to lead visiting Sweet Briar to a 7-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's lacrosse win over Guilford Friday.
Benham netted two of her goals in the first half to stake the Vixens (3-3, 2-1 ODAC) to a 4-2 halftime lead. She tallied her third goal 38 seconds into the second half, which gave Sweet Briar a three-goal edge. Sophomore Julie Sellers (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) scored back-to-back goals in a 71-second span for a 7-3 Vixens' advantage. Guilford's Lily Montgomery (South Freeport, ME/Freeport) answered with consecutive tallies, which pulled Guilford back to within two with six minutes to play. Sweet Briar preserved its lead by limiting the Quakers' possessions and forcing turnovers.
Benham enjoyed a strong all-around game with six ground balls and four caused turnovers, both game highs. Sellers finished with two tallies and junior Kara Strawley (Charlottesville, VA/Covenant School) added two assists. Rookie goalie Emily Fitzpatrick (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) made three saves.
Routhier led Guilford's scoring with two goals and an assist. Montgomery finished with two tallies and sophomore Moira Foley (Freeport, ME/Freeport) added a goal and an assist. Senior goalie Brandi Rhoads (Walnut Creek, CA/Las Lomas) made eight saves in defeat.
Guilford returns to action Wednesday (3/24) with a nonconference game at Ferrum. The Vixens visit Division II Lees-McRae Saturday (3/20) at 2:00 pm.
