GUILFORD POSTS 11-4 WIN AT DIVISION II ST. ANDREWSLaurinburg, NC (03/10/04) -- Freshman Kathryn Hyde (Pownal, ME) totaled three goals and three assists as Guilford's women's lacrosse team defeated St. Andrews, 11-4, Wednesday afternoon. The Quakers (1-2) picked up their first win of the season while the first-year Knights fell to 1-5.
Guilford jumped out early and maintained the momentum in the first half scoring, the game's first eight goals. The Quakers also out shot St. Andrews in the first period, 13-7. Sophomore Katie Gilligan (West Newton, MA) scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 22:54 mark on a pass from Hyde.
The Knights improved their play after halftime and scored the first goal of the second half, a tally by Terrell Wood (Houston, TX). Both teams scored three more goals in the period as the Quakers held on to win by seven.
Sophomore Moira Foley (Freeport, ME) added two goals for Guilford while Gilligan finished with a career-high three goals and two assists. Senior Lauren Goodwin (Newburyport, MA), senior Kate Hardy (Baltimore, MD), and junior Sarah Routhier (North Yarmouth, ME) finished Guilford's scoring.
The Knights had four different goal scorers including Wood, Corey Whitbeck (Newark, NY), Nikki Heath (New Bern, NC), and Melissa Collins (Webster, NC). Whitbeck also chipped in with an assist on Collins' goal.
Brandi Rhoads (Walnut Creek, CA) picked up the win in goal for the Quakers by allowing four goals on 15 shots and making six saves. Allana Sowell (Decatur, GA) took the loss, allowing eight goals in the first half. Stacey Mike (Pikesville, MD) kept the Knights in the game during the second half by making five saves and allowing three goals.
St. Andrews will host its first Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference game this Saturday (3/13) at 3:00 p.m. against Lees-McRae. Guilford is off until next Tuesday (3/16) when it visits nationally ranked Washington and Lee at 4:00 p.m.
