Casto Leads Guilford Past Salem, 71-65

Jessica CastoWinston-Salem, N.C. (1/23/08) -- Jessica Casto led four Guilford students in double-figure scoring with 16 points and six steals, both game highs, in the Quakers’ 71-65 women’s basketball win at Salem College Wednesday night.

The win gives Guilford (10-5) a sweep of the season series and ends the Quakers’ three-game losing streak. Salem drops to 6-12 with the loss.

Ann Seufer added 15 points and four assists for Guilford. Tracey Croner finished with 11 points and six boards. Jasmine Wood added 10 points, a team-high eight rebounds and five steals.

The Quakers shot just 33 percent from the floor, including 30 percent from three-point range. Guilford connected on 50 percent of its free throws, which helped Salem close the gap down the stretch.

Jazmine Gilbert’s 15 points paced the home team. Michala Michaux and Shakila Springs added 14 points apiece in a losing cause. Salem’s Casey Jones scored 13 points.

Salem converted 40 percent of its shots from the floor, including 38 percent from three-point land. The Spirits shot only 42 percent from the free-throw line.

Guilford returns to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday (1/26) afternoon at Lynchburg College.
