Croner Named Student-Athlete of the Week
Greensboro, N.C. (12/11/06) -- Sophomore Tracey Croner of the women's basketball team won the Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award Monday. Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) presents the weekly prize.
Croner, a sophomore forward, averaged 21.5 points and led Guilford's scorers in both games of the Quakers' 2-0 week. She made just under 59 percent of her shots from the floor and all eight free throws. Croner scored 22 of her game- and career-high 26 points in the second half to help Guilford overcome a 15-point second-half deficit and beat Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Emory & Henry, 70-57, Dec. 6. She made nine-of-16 shots from the floor, including seven-of-10 shots in the second half. Croner paced the Quakers with 17 points in her first college start, which helped Guilford down Roanoke, 68-61, Dec. 9. She made eight-of-13 shots against the Maroons, including a three-pointer.
Croner ranks second on the club in scoring with a 11.2 points per game average, which stands 19th among ODAC leaders. Her 56.9 percent field-goal percentage leads the league. Croner averages 3.2 rebounds per game and has made 16-of-18 free throws.
Coach Stephanie Flamini's Quakers (5-4, 4-0 ODAC) finished the 2006 portion of its schedule on a four-game winning streak. All four wins have come in the league for Guilford's first 4-0 conference start since 2001.
Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
