GUILFORD TOPS THIEL, 64-46, CLAIMS THIRD IN TOURNAMENT
Jennifer King Paces Quaker Offense with 22 Points
SALISBURY,
MD (12/3/05) -- Senior guard Jennifer King scored 22 points on
8-of-17 shooting and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Quakers (1-4) to a
64-46 victory over the Tomcats of Thiel College (1-6). Guilford claims third
place in the 13th annual Salisbury Optimist Basketball Classic tournament.
The game was close in the first half, as the teams traded points. Guilford would
then take the lead at the 16:22 mark of the first half and kept the lead for the
rest of the game.
In the second half, Thiel would close to within seven points at the 9:36 mark.
Guilford, however, went on a 9-0 run to put away the game for good.
Along with King, Guilford was led
offensively by freshman Kristine Ellis who scored 12 points on 6-of-12
shooting and led the team with 16 rebounds. Freshman Heather Koehler
scored 10 points of the bench and pulled down nine rebounds.
For Thiel, freshman forward Amber Bodrick and
junior forward Fontella Jones each scored 14 to pace the Tomcat attack.
Bodrick and Jones also led the team in rebounds with eight a piece.
Thiel was hurt in the first half by poor shooting
from the floor, shooting 18.9% (7-of-37) from the field. They improved in the
second half, shooting 32.3% (10-of-31), but it was not enough to stop Guilford.
The Quakers shot 44.4% in the first half (12-of-27) and 42.4% in the second half
(14-of-33).
Guilford returns to action Tuesday (12/6) as it hosts Hollins in its Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
