"Women's Basketball Release (2005-06) - Ellis Sparks Guilford Past E&H, 104-95" - Guilford College

 

Greensboro, NC (12/10/05) -- Freshman forward Kristine Ellis scored a school-record 44 points and senior guard Jennifer King added 30 points in Guilford's 104-95 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win over Emory & Henry Saturday.


Guilford (3-5, 2-1 ODAC) won for the third time in four games thanks to the third-highest scoring game in school history. The home-standing Quakers played just seven student-athletes, compared to the Wasps' 13. Emory & Henry (3-5, 2-2 ODAC) uses an up-tempo style featuring full-court defensive pressure and an offense dependent on dribble penetration and three-point shooting.
 

Ellis scored 22 points in both halves to break Elizabeth Parker's '76 scoring mark set in 1976. Ellis made an ODAC- and school record-tying 18 field goals in 22 attempts, including a three-pointer. She converted seven-of-eight free throws and added 10 rebounds for her third double-double in four games.
 

      King netted 21 second-half points, which helped Guilford overcome a seven-point deficit. Sophomore forward Katherine Brandt's layup with 19:13 left in the game gave the Wasps their largest lead of the half, 51-44. The Quakers answered with a 12-4 burst that included seven points by King and five from Ellis. King's layup at 14:22 broke a 61-61 tie and gave the Quakers the lead for good.
 

      Sophomore guard Kiyett Brown's jumper with 3:27 left capped a 6-0 Emory & Henry burst that pulled the Wasps to within 91-89. The Quakers' defense tightened and Ellis tallied six points in the final 2:09 to help Guilford preserve the win. After Brown's basket, Emory & Henry went nearly three minutes before scoring a field goal.
 

      Brandt paced four Wasps in double-figure scoring with 27 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Freshman guard Miranda Carrasco chipped in 19 points and sophomore guard Lauren Habel added 12 points. Senior guard Kate Childress did not score, but dished out a game-high 13 assists.
 

      Guilford junior guard Dionne Graham totalled 11 points and eight assists. King also had eight helpers, plus nine rebounds, and was the only player on the floor for all 40 minutes. Guilford rookie forward Shevon Hackett had a game- and career-high 12 rebounds.
 

      Both teams are off until after Christmas. Emory & Henry hosts Roanoke Jan. 5. Guilford visits Randolph-Macon Jan. 7.
