MAROONS BATTLE BACK IN 71-65 WIN OT OVER GUILFORD
Erin Hanson Scores a Career-High 27 Points, Maroons Trailed by Nine with 3:49 Left
SALEM,
VA (2/12/05) --The Roanoke College women's basketball team got a
career-high 27 points from freshman Erin Hanson, battled back from nine points
down with 3:49 left in the game, and benefited from a missed free throw with
just 0.1 seconds left ,all in a 71-65 overtime victory over Guilford College on
Saturday. The Maroons improve to 17-6 on the season and 13-6 in the Old Dominion
Athletic Conference, while the Quakers fall to 9-14 and 7-11 and have a
four-game winning streak snapped.
Trailing 62-53 with just 3:49 left in the
contest, the Maroons allowed the Quakers just one point in the rest of
regulation. Freshman Erin Hanson scored on a layup and made two free throws to
make the score 62-57 in Guilford's advantage with 2:11 left on the clock. Jennie
Schafer then scored on a basket in the paint with 1:36 to play to make the score
62-59. As Guilford was bringing the ball up against Roanoke full court pressure
on the ensuing possession, junior Lindsay Reynolds stole the ball from the
Guilford point guard and then received a pass from Veronica Kelly and made a
fastbreak layup to cut the lead to just one, 62-61, with 1:20 left.
With just 21 seconds remaining, the Quakers
missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw and the Maroons collected the
loose ball. Out of a timeout, the Maroons went to Hanson, who scored on a
bank-shot as she drove down the left side of the lane with just seven seconds
left to give Roanoke a 63-62 lead.
After a timeout, the Quakers quickly brought the
ball up court, giving junior Jennifer King the last shot. King was
fouled on the shot, which did not go in, and was awarded two free throws with
just 0.1 seconds showing on the clock. King made the first of the two, to
give her makes on all 11 of her attempts in the game, but missed the second,
sending the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, Hanson scored two minutes
in and Brittany Johnson scored in the paint to give the Maroons a 67-63 lead.
King came back with a driving layup to make the score 67-65, but those would
be the lone points the Quakers would score over the five minute period. Kelly
and Hanson iced the Maroon win with two free throws each with less than 40
seconds to play.
The Maroons never led in the game until Hanson's
shot late in the second half. The Maroons fell behind by six points early in the
first half, but briefly tied the score at 12 on the second of two Johnson free
throws with 11:20 left in the first 20 minutes. Hanson also evened the score at
16 with a basket with 7:46 to go. The Quakers led by nine points, 30-21, with
less than 10 seconds to play, but Hanson drilled a three from the win to make
the score 30-24 at the break.
Hanson finished the game with a career-high 27
points for the Maroons, scoring 13 in thee first half an 23 in regulation. She
also led the team with nine rebounds. Chandra Forrester was the only other
Maroon in double-figures, scoring 11. Kayce Smith and Schafer each scored
nine, with all nine of Smith's coming from three-point range.
King ended the day with 32 for the Quakers, who also got 16 points and six rebounds from freshman Brittiany Green. Courtney Hill led all players with 12 rebounds.
