Women's Basketball Release - 2003-04 Pumpkins - Guilford College

  • GUILFORD WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CARVES PUMPKINS FOR LOCAL RETIREMENT HOMES

Guilford's women's basketball team took a timeout from classes and preseason practices to spread a some autumn cheer to some of Greensboro's older citizens.  The team participated in a community event Monday as the Quakers delivered hand-carved pumpkins to the residents of the Greensboro Manor Retirement Community and Guilford Home.

The Quakers will also gather with the Guilford's men's basketball team Halloween night to distribute candy to trick-or-treaters visiting campus.

The purpose of the activities was to increase the team's visibility in the immediate community while getting team members involved in community-service activities.

Junior Kristyn Casey said the pumpkin carving was "a lot of fun.  It was a great team activity."

"I think it is important for our team to participate in activities that are not just basketball related," said Guilford coach Stephanie Flamini.  "I want our players to learn that forming relationships within our community is an essential component of any program."

"This was a good bonding experience for the team and a lot of us realized we can do stuff together besides play basketball," said freshman Dionne Graham.  "It was just a fun experience.  A lot of us had never done anything like it before.

Flamini echoed Graham's sentiments.  "I really enjoyed the experience and I know they did also."

Guilford plays its first game November 21 against Ohio Wesleyan in a three-day tournament hosted by Marymount in Arlington, VA.  Guilford's women return 13 letter winners from the 2002-03 squad that went 20-7.
