GUILFORD WOMEN'S HOOPS TEAM RANKED AMONG DIVISION III'S BEST
Greensboro, NC (11/07/03) -- Guilford's women's basketball team received 65 votes in the preseason D3hoops.com Division III Top 25 poll, released Thursday. The Quakers earned the 27th-highest point total in the 25-team poll, 27 points shy of Washington & Jefferson, the 25th-ranked team. Guilford is the top-rated team from Division III's south region.
A panel of 25 sports information directors, coaches and writers selected the D3hoops.com poll, which is published weekly.
First-year head coach Stephanie Flamini inherited 13 letter winners and four starters from last year's 20-7 team that won the regular-season Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) crown. Guilford, which has enjoyed three straight 20-win seasons, lost to league champion Randolph-Macon in the 2003 ODAC Tournament semifinals. The Yellow Jackets received 37 votes in the Top 25 poll and are the second ODAC team listed among teams receiving votes.
Junior forward Courtney Hill (Kannapolis, NC/North Rowan) and senior guard A.J. Robertson (Eden, NC/Morehead) each received Second Team All-ODAC honors last year. Robertson led Guilford's scorers last season with a career-best 13.1 points per game average, followed by Hill's 12.8 points per game. Hill led the team in field goal percentage (.594) and rebounds (6.5 rpg.).
The Quakers open the season November 21 against Ohio Wesleyan in an eight-team tournament hosted by Marymount (VA). Seven of the eight squads in the field are either ranked or received votes in the D3hoops.com poll.
