  • Oktavec's shot lifts Eagles PAST GUILFORD

Bridgewater, VA (02/15/03) -- Bridgewater College junior Sarah Oktavec followed in her own missed shot for the winning basket with just two seconds left in the game to lift the Eagles to a 55-53 victory over Guilford in ODAC action Saturday afternoon at Nininger Hall.

The Eagles jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first five minutes and controlled play for the rest of the half, leading 31-21, at the break.

The Eagles took their biggest lead of the game with 15:07 left when Megan Forster scored on a layup, giving the Eagles a 41-25 lead.

Another layup by Forster at the 7:10 mark put the Eagles on top 49-38, but then the Quakers made their move with a 10-0 spurt. A jumper by A.J. Robertson and two buckets by Courtney Hill trimmed the lead to five, 49-44, with 5:39 to go. Robertson hit another jumper and Hill added a layup to pull the Quakers within one, 49-48, with 3:38 left.

Katie Brennan hit a big shot for the Eagles to push the lead to three, but another Robertson jumper trimmed the margin back to one, 51-50, with 1:53 to play.

After a BC turnover, the Quakers had the chance to take their first lead of the game, but Jackie Hardenbergh missed a 3-pointer. The rebound went out of bounds off the Eagles, but the Quakers missed another opportunity to go on top when Robertson failed to convert on a short jumper.

Oktavec gave the Eagles a little cushion with a layup at the 53-second mark, but Kristy Casey swished a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left to tie the score at 53-53.

The Eagles then worked the clock and Oktavec drove the lane, looking for the winning score. Her first shot was off target, but she grabbed the rebound and scored the winning points with two ticks left.

Forster led the Eagles with 22 points and Brennan added 14. Hardenbergh paced the Quakers with 12 and Robertson added 11.

The Eagles improved to 9-14 overall and 8-10 in the ODAC while Guilford dropped to 17-6 overall and 14-4 in the ODAC.
