Season Outlook - Guilford College

  • 2005-06 Season Outlook

Thanks to an exciting group of incoming student-athletes, Guilford's women's basketball will build towards winning an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title this season. The newcomers bring a new mindset and passion for the game that breeds success. A healthy season should result in a winning year.

Head coach Stephanie Flamini's club finished the 2004-05 campaign by winning eight of its final 12 games. The Quakers posted an 11-15 overall record and a 9-11 ODAC mark. Guilford qualified for the ODAC Tournament as the number-six seed. Senior Courtney Hill '05 concluded a stellar career as a First Team All-ODAC selection and the program's 12th all-time leading scorer with 1,071 points.

The Quakers return three letter winners from last year's team, including senior Jennifer King, who has already scored over 1,000 points in her career. She earned Second Team All-ODAC recognition last season after leading Guilford with a 15.0 points per game average. A versatile and talented guard, King will anchor one of the league's top backcourts. She is one of the best three-point shooters in school history and can create scoring opportunities off the dribble. Her positive attitude and leadership this year make her an important piece of the squad.

Junior point guard Dionne Graham enjoyed a breakout season in 2004-05 and expects to be even better in 2005-06. She is very fast and makes things happen for the offense when she gets into the lane. Her shooting has improved this year, which will make her even more valuable. Junior Bobbi Jo Taft, one of the team's new guards, transferred to Guilford this year from Mount Ida where she averaged over five points and two assists in 42 games for the Mustangs.

The Quakers are blessed with a bevy of wing players. Rookie Brittany Bumgarner is a super shooter who should contribute right away. The head coach of a local club team, she exemplifies the new and upbeat attitude of this year's squad. Kristine Ellis, an outside scoring threat, played the wing in high school, but could see time in the post at Guilford.

Sophomore Katie Spina, the Quakers' returning post player, has made exceptional progress during the off-season. She's complemented by hard-posting rookie Heather Koehler and the promising Shevon Hackett.

The Quakers have five games before opening ODAC play. A season-opening contest with Division I Elon highlights the nonconference slate. Guilford also plays crosstown rival Greensboro College in its annual Greensboro Coliseum contest. The Quakers will also compete in a four-team tournament in December hosted by Salisbury. The best Division III team Guilford will see all year could be league-rival Randolph-Macon, the defending Division III runner up.
