Guilford Ranked Eighth in Preseason ODAC Volleyball Poll

Greensboro, N.C.(8/27/09) -- Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) volleyball coaches picked Guilford College eighth in the league's preseason poll Thursday. Washington and Lee University, the defending ODAC champion, topped the 11-team poll with four first-place votes and 111 total poll points.

Fourth-year head coach Emily Gann leads a squad that features nine returning letter winners from last year's 7-23 unit, plus three newcomers. Junior captain Anna Miller, a two-time honorable mention All-ODAC selection, leads the way with a strong all-around game. She led Guilford in kills (269), service aces (44) and points (329) in 2008. Senior captain Bethany Hawks is Guilford's lone three-year letter winner. She led the 2008 team with 3.45 digs per set and a .918 serve reception percentage. Her 376 digs stand ninth in school history. Sophomore setter Taylor Phillips, also another team captain,stood among ODAC leaders in assists (620) and second on the team in service aces (28).

The Quakers have a scrimmage against Davidson Community College Saturday (8/29) at 11:00 a.m. Guilford begins their regular season Wednesday (9/2) at 7:00 p.m. versus Peace College in the Quaker's Ragan-Brown Field House.
