Kozar Wins Weekly Award

KozarGreensboro, N.C. (9/15/09) -- Guilford College junior Courtney Kozar won her second career Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week Award Tuesday. The weekly prize is presented by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Kozar, a 5-7 outside hitter, received the honor after she averaged 2.56 kills and 2.81 points per set in Guilford's 3-2 week. Kozar also had a match- and season-high 20 kills along with 12 digs and two blocks to rally Guilford past Meredith, 3-2, after the Quakers dropped the first two sets. Kozar hit a career-best .425 in the match and put away four kills in the decisive fifth set.

Coach Emily Gann's Quakers are 5-5, which marks the program's record since a 6-6 start in 1997. The Quakers next match marks the first game of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) season. They play at Roanoke at 6:30p.m. on Sept. 16.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford's SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school's student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive, and the start of a new program, Champs Life Skills, maintains intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the campus educational program and the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. Its aim is to increase student-athletes community involvement, as well as engage the Guilford community with the athletic department.
