Haley Ortmann Wins Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week Award
Greensboro, N.C. (9/25/07) -- Guilford College freshman Haley Ortmann won the school's Student-Athlete of the Week Award presented by the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The rookie is the volleyball team's first recipient of the weekly prize.
A 5-8 outside hitter, Ortmann averaged 5.6 kills, 3.0 digs and 0.9 service aces per game in the Quakers' two victories last week. She also hit .250 in 140 attacks, which led the team. Ortmann had eight kills, two aces and 12 digs in a 3-0 league loss to Bridgewater College Sept. 18. She helped the Quakers end a four-match losing skid with a career-high 28 kills on .338 hitting in Guilford's 3-1 win at North Carolina Wesleyan College Sept. 20. Her 28 kills stand seventh in school history, third in four-game contests. Ortmann added three aces and eight digs in the victory. Two days later, she posted her third 20-kill match of the year with 20 putaways on .326 hitting against Salem College. Ortmann added 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the year.
Ortmann averages a team-best 3.0 kills per game on .140 hitting. She stands second on the club with 2.69 digs per game and third with 0.33 aces per game. Ortmann has four double-doubles this fall and has led the Quakers in kills seven times.
Second-year head coach Emily Hayes' Quakers are 5-10 (0-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference). Guilford seeks its third straight win Tuesday (9/25) versus visiting Sweet Briar College at 6:30 p.m.
Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include reading to local schoolchildren and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
