Volleyball Release (2005) - Volleyball Season Summary - Guilford College

The Quakers end the season with an 8-18 overall record, 3-7 in the ODAC.   Head coach Glenda Dellinger expects all 12 of this season's letter winners, to return next season.

Guilford 0, Washington and Lee 3: Guilford's volleyball team fell to top-seeded Washington and Lee in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) volleyball championships Friday, 30-9, 30-11, 30-14.  Brittani Leathern led Guilford with eight kills in the match.  Click here for the full release.  Click here for the ODAC Volleyball Championship website.

Guilford 3, Sweet Briar 0:  Guilford's volleyball team defeated Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Sweet Briar Saturday, 30-14, 30-14, 30-20 to secure the eighth and final seed in the upcoming ODAC Volleyball Championships.   Brittani Leathern and Jessica Smith had 14 and 12 kills apiece for the Quakers.  Becca Jones had 24 assists and Kaci Loeffler recorded eight digs.  Click here for the full release with statistics and narration from the match.

 

Guilford 0, Bridgewater 3:  Guilford's volleyball team fell to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Bridgewater Wednesday, 30-23, 30-14, 30-27. Guilford 3, Randolph Macon Woman's 0: Freshman Emily Becher had 12 kills, three service aces and nine digs in Guilford's 3-0 volleyball victory over visiting Randolph-Macon Woman's College Tuesday night. The Quakers ended a six-match losing streak with the 30-18, 30-26, 30-26 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) triumph.  Click here for the full release.

 

Guilford 0, Randolph Macon 3; Guilford 0, Catholic 3: Guilford's volleyball team fell to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Randolph-Macon, 3-0, and dropped a 3-0 nonleague decision to Catholic Saturday at Crenshaw Gym. Randolph-Macon (19-3, 7-1 ODAC) made quick work of the Quakers (6-16, 1-5 ODAC), 30-11, 30-7, 30-18. Freshman setter Becca Jones paced the Quakers with 10 assists. Freshman Emily Becher made seven kills and added 10 digs. Jessica Smith had five kills.  In the second match, Catholic prevailed, 31-29, 30-18, 30-24. The loss extended Guilford's losing streak to six. Jones had 32 assists, 11 digs and four kills. Rookie middle hitter Brittani Leathern chipped in 16 kills and Becher added 17 putaways, plus 23 digs. Kaci Loeffler made a team-high 18 digs.  The Quakers return to action Tuesday (10/18) against ODAC-rival Randolph-Macon Woman's College at 7:00 p.m. in Guilford's Ragan-Brown Field House.

 

Guilford 0, Peace 3: Lindsey Kabbes put away 17 kills on .680 hitting in host Peace College's 3-0 nonconference volleyball win over Guilford Wednesday night. The scores of the match were: 30-27, 30-23, 31-29.  Click here for the full release.

 

Bridgewater captured its second straight Guilford College Volleyball Invitational title Saturday with a 3-2 win over Christopher Newport in the championship match. Maryville College defeated Guilford in the third-place match, 3-0.  The Quakers' Emily Becher earned first team all-tournament honors. Guilford 2, Roanoke 3: Host Roanoke rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Guilford, 3-2, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference volleyball action Wednesday night in the Bast Center. The Maroons improve to 10-7 (4-3 ODAC), while Guilford falls to 5-10 (1-5 ODAC).  Scores of the match were: 26-30, 23-30, 31-29, 30-16, 17-15. The loss ends Guilford's two-match winning streak.  Guilford's Becca Jones had 52 assists and 15 digs. Fellow freshman Brittani Leathern threw down a team- and career-high 23 kills and had three blocks. Emily Becher added 17 kills and 13 digs. Megan Tucker contributed six kills and 11 digs.  The Quakers host the Guilford Invitational Tournament this Friday and Saturday in the Ragan-Brown Field House. Guilford meets Piedmont Friday (10/7) at 3:30 p.m. and Christopher Newport at 7:30 p.m

 

Guilford 3, Salem 0: The Quakers won their second consecutive game defeating nonconference opponent Salem Monday 30-5, 30-9, and 30-19 at Ragan-Brown Field House.  Guilford swept the season series with Salem, 2-0.  The Quakers also set a school record for aces in a three-set match (26).  Guilford freshman Becca Jones led the way with 17 assists, seven aces, three digs, and three kills for the Quakers.  Classmates Brittani Leathern added 9 kills, while Emily Becher contributed four kills and six digs for Guilford.  Click here for statistics and play-by-play from the game

 

Guilford 3, Eastern Mennonite 1: The Quakers halted a two-game skid by defeating Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent Eastern Mennonite Saturday 21-30, 30-18, 30-25, and 33-31 at Ragan-Brown Field House.   Guilford freshman Becca Jones had 45 assists, 10 digs, and six kills for the Quakers.  Classmates Brittani Leathern contributed 19 kills and five blocks, and Kaci Loeffler added 11 kills and 13 digs for Guilford.  Click here for statistics and play-by-play from the game

 

Guilford 0, North Carolina Wesleyan 3: Greensboro, NC (09/29/05) - Setter Caitlyn George had eight kills, 29 assists and five service aces to lift visiting North Carolina Wesleyan to a 30-18, 30-28, 30-23 nonconference volleyball win at Guilford College Thursday night. The win gives the Battling Bishops (11-8) a sweep of the season series with Guilford, 2-0.  Sarah Edwards paced North Carolina Wesleyan with 12 kills on .321 hitting and added eight digs. Senior libero Melissa Leonard enjoyed a solid defensive night with a match-high 22 assists and no reception errors. Erin Briant (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville) made eight kills for the Battling Bishops.  Guilford freshman Brittani Leathern led all student-athletes with 16 putaways on .462 hitting. Becca Jones had 27 assists and five digs for the Quakers, who lost for the eighth time in nine matches. Guilford 0, Lynchburg 3:The Lynchburg College volleyball team defeated visiting Guilford College 30-22, 30-20, 30-19 Tuesday evening to raise the Hornets' record to over .500 for the first time (9-8) in 2005. Lynchburg improved to 3-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) with its third straight win. Guilford fell to 3-8 overall, 0-4 in the ODAC.  Rookie Becca Jones made a game-high 26 assists and added four kills for the Quakers. Classmate Emily Becher put away a team-high 10 kills and scooped up eight digs. Freshman hitter Megan Tucker had five kills and a club-high 12 digs.  Sophomore Katie Warlick had 13 kills and nine digs for the Hornets and Sarah Boggess had 10 kills. Dara Sandifer had 22 assists, Ashley Martin posted a team-high 17 digs and Amanda Quinn served four aces.

 

Guilford 3, Chowan 1:  Freshman Brittani Leathern put away a team-high 22 kills and served up four aces to lead Guilford to a 3-1 nonconference volleyball win at Chowan Thursday night. The win snapped the Quakers' (3-7) seven-match losing streak. Chowan falls to 4-6. Scores of the match were: 29-31, 30-22, 30-19, 30-19.  Freshman setter Becca Jones contributed five kills, 38 assists and 10 digs to the Quakers' win. Freshman Kaci Loeffler added eight kills, seven digs and three aces. Freshman Taylor Brown had a team-high 11 digs and three aces.

 

Guilford 1, Emory & Henry 3:  After splitting the first two games, Emory & Henry rallied to win the third game and closed out the Quakers in four 30-22, 28-30, 30-28, 30-17 Tuesday night.  Guilford was led by Becca Jones' 47 assists, along with Brittani Leathern's 19 kills, and Emily Becher's 17 kills and 13 defensive digs. 

 

Guilford 0, Virginia Wesleyan 3: Virginia Wesleyan defeated Guilford in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Friday in Virginia Beach, VA, 3-0. Scores of the match were: 30-22, 30-18, 30-19. The Marlins improve to 8-2 overall, 3-0 in the ODAC. Guilford drops to 2-6 (0-2 ODAC) with its sixth straight setback.  Jen Perkinson led the league-leading Marlins with nine kills. Candice Doloresco had five aces and Sarah Geralds made 15 assists.  Jessica Smith and Brittani Leathern paced the Quakers with six kills apiece. Becca Jones contributed 19 assists and four digs. Emily Becher had five kills and a team-high 12 digs. Smith added two aces and five digs.  The Quakers return to action Sept. 20 against league-rival Emory & Henry at 6:30 p.m. in the Ragan-Brown Field House.

 

Guilford 0, Washington and Lee 3: The Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated Guilford College, 30-5, 30-15, 30-23, in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for the Generals.  Click here for the full release.

Guilford 0, North Carolina Wesleyan 3: The Bishop volleyball squad continued its impressive play of late, sweeping Guilford College by scores of 30-15, 30-22, and 30-16 on Tuesday night in Everett Gym.  Click here for the full release.

 

Guilford 0, Greensboro 3: Guilford College's volleyball team suffered its first losses of the season Friday and Saturday at the Greensboro College Tournament.  Greensboro downed Guilford in the final match Saturday morning 30-21, 30-13, 30-25.  The Pride improve to 7-0.  Click here for the full release.

 

Guilford 0, Emory & Henry 3:  Emory & Henry posted a 30-26, 30-11, 30-17 win in the Quakers' second match of the day. The Wasps are now 4-2. 

 

Guilford 1, Meredith 3:  Guilford College's volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday at the Greensboro College Tournament. Meredith improved to 3-0 with a 3-1 victory over the Quakers, who drop to 2-1 with the loss. The scores of the match were: 30-19, 29-31, 30-21, 30-15.  Emily Becher paced the Quakers with 17 kills and Brittani Leathern added 11 putaways. Kaci Loeffler added 12 kills and 13 digs and Casey Lockhart added seven pickups. Taylor Brown had 38 assists in her collegiate debut at setter.

 

Guilford 3, Peace 2:  Guilford freshman Taylor Brown scored the winning point with an ace in the fifth game, as the Quakers battled back from a 2-1 game deficit to defeat Peace 3-2.  Guilford was led by freshman Becca Jones' 48 assists along with classmates Brittiani Leathern and Emily Becher, who recorded 21 and 18 kills respectively.  Click here for the statistics and play-by-play from the match.

 

Guilford 3, Salem 0:  The Quakers dispatched Salem 3-0 to open the 2005 volleyball season.  Guilford was led by 31 assists from freshmen Becca Jones.  Freshmen classmates Jessica Smith and Brittiani Leathern added eight kills apiece while Emily Becher recorded six digs defensively.  Click here for Guilford's statistics from the match.
