  • McCRACKEN RESIGNS VOLLEYBALL POST AT GUILFORD

Greensboro, NC (11/14/02) --  Chuck McCracken announced his resignation as Guilford College's head volleyball coach effective December 31, 2002, to pursue other professional opportunities. The second coach in Guilford's 29-year volleyball history, McCracken leaves after guiding the Quakers to a 136-179 record over the last 11 seasons.

Guilford concluded its best season since 1997 last Friday with a 3-2 loss to Randolph-Macon in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Quarterfinals. The Quakers finished 12-17 in 2002 and earned the fifth seed in the ODAC Tournament with a 5-5 conference record. Guilford senior outside hitter Jennifer Pue-Gilchrist won this year's ODAC's Player of the Year Award and a second straight spot on the first team all-conference squad. She is the 11th McCracken-coached player to earn All-ODAC honors and the second ODAC Player of the Year in his tenure.

A member of Guilford's coaching staff since 1990, McCracken assisted Gayle Currie before assuming his first college head-coaching job in 1992 when Currie became the school's athletic director. The Quakers went 51-11 in McCracken's first two seasons and narrowly missed an NCAA playoff berth in 1992. Guilford reached the NCAAs in 1993 after winning its first ODAC title. Brenda Davis '94 earned the ODAC Player of the Year Award that season and McCracken was the league's Coach of the Year. Guilford qualified for the ODAC Tournament in 10 of his 11 seasons as coach.

McCracken coached Guilford's women's tennis team from 1994-99 and helped the Quakers to a 73-32 record in that time. Guilford garnered four second-place finishes at the ODAC Tennis Tournament in his tenure and was ranked among the nation's top 25 Division III teams from 1994-96. McCracken also served as Guilford's intramural director from 1992-2000.

The search for Guilford's new volleyball coach will begin immediately with hopes of filling the vacancy by the end of the calendar year.
