Head Athletic Trainer Mary Broos Retires After 30 Years
Guilford to Establish Mary N. Broos Endowment for Athletic Training
Mary Broos is retiring from her position as head athletic trainer after 30 years of service to Guilford College community. Guilford desires to establish an endowed fund honoring Mary Neal Broos as a testament to her hard work and dedication to the college and the field of athletic training. This endowment is to be a comprehensive fund that will create scholarships for students pursuing a degree in sports medicine and provide programmatic support for sports medicine and athletic training within the intercollegiate athletics program.
The goal for the fund is a commitment of $50,000 to be reached by December 31, 2008. Should the goal not be met, donations will be placed in a restricted (not endowed) fund for Athletic Training.
Contributions to this fund will be diversified in the following ways:
Mary N. Broos Endowment for Athletic Training
- Endowed Scholarship – 50%
An endowed scholarship fund will provide educational access to students that otherwise may not be able to afford this academic opportunity and privilege. This fund will create scholarships for the brightest and the best students without tapping annual operating funds or relying on tuition increases.
- Endowed Program Fund – 50%
This fund will provide a flexible supply of funds that will enable the head athletic trainer to place resources where there is an immediate need or where opportunities are the greatest.
Please consider making your gift to the Mary N. Broos Endowment for Athletic Training. You can donate by mail by sending your check payable to Guilford College (subject line "Mary Broos") to 5800 West Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410, by phone at 336-316-2317 or online by clicking here.

Mary Broos plans to retire as Guilford’s head athletic trainer in May 2008. For the past three decades she has developed one of North Carolina’s most respected athletic training and sports medicine programs. Mary became Guilford’s first full-time trainer in 1978 and was the first woman to head a college sports medicine program in the State of North Carolina.
As a result of her exceptional dedication to her work, she was the first woman inducted into the North Carolina Trainers Association (NCATA) Hall of Fame and served on the training staffs for the 1984 Summer Olympics, the 1986 World Lacrosse Games, the 1987 U.S. Olympic Festival and the 1987 International Gymnastics Training Camp. This endowment will enable the college to build upon the program Mary established, following the standard of excellence Mary has set.
Broos will be honored at a reception on May 24th, 2008.
