Jennifer Simms Named Assistant Coach at Guilford College
Greensboro, N.C. (1/17/08) -- Guilford College interim Athletic Director Tom Palombo announced the addition of Jennifer Simms to the Quakers' athletic department staff as assistant softball coach Tuesday. Simms starts her college coaching career as a member of second-year head coach Dennis Shores' staff in the Quakers' seventh fastpitch season in school history.
Simms graduated from Greensboro College, Guilford's cross-town rival, in May 2007, with a degree in sociology. She started four years for coach Kama Tucker's softball team and holds the school records for career games (148) and starts (142). The outfielder hit .288 for her career and ranks among Greensboro's all-time leaders in home runs (4), doubles (20) and RBIs (65). The Pride went 99-59-2 in her four seasons, including a school-record 32-10 in 2007. Simms earned Second Team All-USA South Athletic Conference honors in 2005 and 2006 and was a 2007 honorable mention all-league selection. She received Greensboro's Student-Athlete Mentor of the Year in 2006 and was the treasurer of her senior class.
Simms grew up in Liberty, N.C., and starred on the softball fields of Eastern Randolph High School where she was a two-time All-Tri-County 3-A Conference selection. She has worked a number of softball clinics and served as an assistant coach with the Triad Storm club team.
Guilford opens the 2007 season against Simms' alma mater, Greensboro College, Feb. 13 on the Quakers' Haworth Field. Simms' father, Chip Simms, is an assistant coach for the Pride. Shores returns eight starters from last year's 10-30 team.
