Guilford Sweeps Randolph-Macon Woman's in Softball Doubleheader

DeNina EldridgeLynchburg, Va. (4/4/07) -- Guilford swept its first softball doubleheader of the year Wednesday with a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) wins at Randolph-Macon Woman's College. The wins ended a string of nine straight losses and improved Guilford's record to 7-25, 3-11 in the ODAC. The Wildcats fell to 5-19 and 0-14 in the league.

In the opener, DeNina Eldridge pitched a complete game and struck out a career-high nine batters. She retired 13 of the game's final 15 batters after a five-run Wildcats' third inning. The freshman helped her cause at the plate with a two-run double in the first. Kelly Guarnieri scored the winning run from third base on a Randolph-Macon Woman's College error in the top of the sixth to provide the winning margin. Taryn Pulvermuller had a pair of hits in the first game.

Pulvermuller got the pitching victory in the nightcap, an 11-3 Guilford win in six innings. The Quakers took advantage of nine Wildcats walks and batted around in the third and fourth frames. The 11 runs marked a season high. Freshman Charissa Duncan had four of Guilford's 12 hits, a career high. Guarnieri went 2-3 with three RBI, including a two-run single in the third inning. Pulvermuller helped her own cause with an pair of RBIs. Emma Shew went 2-4 and scored twice.

The Quakers are back in action Friday at North Carolina Wesleyan.
