GUILFORD SOFTBALL TEAM PICKED SIXTH IN ODAC COACHES' POLL
Greensboro, NC (2/6/06) -- Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball coaches picked Guilford College sixth in their preseason poll, which the league office released Monday. The Quakers received 53 points, one behind fifth-place Emory & Henry. Two-time defending league champion Roanoke earned seven of 10 first-place votes and the poll's top spot with 97 points. Lynchburg placed second with 93 points and three first-place votes.
Guilford head coach Ty Cook welcomes back seven letter winners from last year's club that won a school-record 16 games and reached the six-team ODAC Tournament for the second time in three years. Three of the returners started last season, including infielder Carla Cain, who is the Quakers' top returning hitter after batting .341 in 2005 with nine doubles and a team-best 22 runs batted in (RBI). Cain received Third Team All-Atlantic Region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association last season. Senior Jennifer Evans is Guilford's top returning pitcher after compiling a 6-11 record with a 3.61 earned run average in 21 appearances last season. She also hit .299 with three doubles and 11 RBI.
The Quakers open the 2006 season Feb. 18 against visiting Peace at 1:00 p.m.
