EAGLES SWEEP SOFTBALL DOUBLEHEADER FROM GUILFORD
Harrisonburg, VA (4/3/05) -- Bridgewater College rallied in the bottom of
the seventh inning in both games Sunday afternoon to sweep a doubleheader from
the Guilford Quakers in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action. The
Eagles won the opener 2-1 and then took the second game 3-2.
The Quakers took a 1-0 in the first game in the
top of the sixth. Jennifer King doubled with one out and Hawi Hall
followed with a RBI-single up the middle.
Guilford starter Christi Dunnigan retired
the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh before walking Amy Childs.
Freshman Jennifer Hall then belted a walk-off homer to straightaway center
field, giving the Eagles a 2-1 victory.
Lisa Rhodes picked up the win on the mound for
the Eagles. Rhodes was in trouble most of the game, but allowed just the single
run while giving up 12 hits. She struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Dunnigan allowed five hits while striking out six and walking two.
The Eagles jumped on top in game two with a run
in the first. Meredith Carter singled, stole second and continued to third when
the throw bounced away. Carter scored on Lindsay Ware's sacrifice bunt.
Guilford tied the score in the fourth when
Kendra Harvey reached on an infield single and scored on a double by
Ashley Cooke. The Quakers then took the lead in the fifth when Hall
reached on an error and scored on a double by Jennifer Franklin.
The Eagles rallied in the seventh. Relief pitcher
Zenovia Hogue walked the first two batters before Dunnigan
re-entered the game. Amy Childs then loaded the bases when her wind-blown popup
dropped in for a single. Jennifer Evans replaced Dunnigan
and retired Hall on a fielders choice for the first out of the inning. Meredith
Carter then worked Evans for a walk to tie the score and Ware walked on
four pitches to force in the winning run.
Marlo Powell went the distance for the Eagles
allowing just one earned run on seven hits. She struck out two and did not walk
a batter.
The Eagles improved to 14-11 overall and 5-3 in
the ODAC. Guilford dropped to 7-15 overall and 3-3 in the ODAC.
