Newport News, VA (04/01/04) -- The sixth-ranked Christopher Newport softball squad swept a doubleheader Thursday, beating Guilford College 9-6 and 9-3 in Newport News.

The Lady Captains, who this week attained their highest national ranking ever at number-six in the country, have now won 13 straight games.

Christopher Newport won game one, 9-6, with a 13-hit attack, led by Dallas Slosjarik's three hits, including an RBI triple in the first inning. C.J. McQueen, who went the distance pitching for Christopher Newport, also smacked two triples and knocked in three runs. Renee Sigafoos capped the scoring with a three-run home run in the sixth inning.

The win for McQueen was her second in as many decisions this season. Jennifer Evans took the loss for Guilford. The Quakers were led in game one by Ashley Cooke who had three hits.

In the nightcap, Christopher Newport came from behind for a 9-3 triumph. Trailing 3-0 in the second inning, the Captains went to the bullpen and Michelle Kass then proceeded to shut down Guilford the rest of the way. Kass went five and one-third innings, allowed no runs on just two hits and struck out six. She improved her record to 11-4 with the win. Lindsay Paul took the loss for Guilford.

Andrea Rohde led the Captains' offense in game two with a double and triple and three runs batted in. McQueen again had two hits and scored three times. Jennifer Franklin had two singles and an RBI for Guilford.

Christopher Newport improves to 26-4 on the season with the wins, and the Lady Captains will return to USA South Conference play Saturday hosting Ferrum College.

      Guilford falls to 6-18 on the year.
