Appenzeller Field is currently home to Guilford’s football and lacrosse teams, and will be used by soccer teams in the future. Intramural sports and other outdoor events will also be held on the field.

Artificial turf is more durable in inclement weather and has a number of environmentally sustainable features, such as reduced need for fertilizers and watering. Additionally, the new surface will allow team contests and practices to be scheduled throughout the school year, reflecting the “one-game-field” concept in the campus master plan.
The turf installation was made possible by a $1 million gift from the Edward Armfield Sr. Foundation, which had previously funded the 2006 upgrades of the Armfield Center’s seating, score board and press box. Carolina Green Corporation (CGC) was the project’s contractor.
