Guilford's Poplin, Carter Win ODAC Awards
Greensboro, N.C. (10/23/06) -- Guilford College's Jennah Carter received the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Women's Soccer Player of the Week Award Monday. Guilford's Joseph Poplin won the ODAC's Golfer of the Week Award and was also named the school's Student-Athlete of the Week by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Carter, a three-time winner of the league's weekly prize this year, scored seven goals and three assists in the Quakers' 3-0 week. She scored her first hat trick of the season when she netted all three goals in the Quakers' 3-0 home win over Chowan Oct. 16. Two days later, Carter tallied a goal and an assist in Guilford's 5-0 win over league-rival Sweet Briar. She finished the week with a flourish, matching her career high with seven points on three goals and an assist in the Quakers' 8-0 victory over Randolph-Macon Woman's College Oct. 21. Carter set Guilford's career assists record in the match with her 24th career helper.
Carter leads the Quakers with 48 points on 21 goals and six assists. She needs three goals to break the school record for goals in a season she set last year. The senior forward has eight multiple-goal matches in 2006 and four game-winning goals. Her 48 points rank fourth in Guilford history. She enters Tuesday's (10/24) final regular-season contest at Greensboro ranked second on Guilford's career points (128) and goals (52) lists.
Coach Eric Lewis' Quakers (12-5-1, 9-1-1 ODAC) can finish no lower than second in the ODAC, which will result in a home match this Saturday (10/28) in the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals. Guilford's nine league wins represent a school record.
Poplin turned in the best individual finish of his career by placing second at the Gordin Collegiate Classic Oct. 15-16 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He shot his low round of the fall with a three-under 68 in Sunday's opening round and finished with a one-under 141 over 36 holes. Poplin's performance helped Guilford place third in the 12-team tournament that included 11 of the top-12 squads from the 2006 NCAA Division III Championships. The Quakers, ranked third in the current Golf Coaches Association of America/Bridgestone Division III poll, edged top-ranked Methodist and second-rated Oglethorpe at the Gordin.
Poplin leads the ODAC with a 71.38 stroke average over eight rounds. He has finished no lower than eighth in four tournaments this fall. Coach Jack Jensen's Quakers wrap up the fall campaign Oct. 30-31 at the Oglethorpe Invitational in Gainesville, Ga.
Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Other recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
