Hayes, LaFollette Added to Guilford Staff

GUILFORD ADDS TWO TO ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT STAFF

      Greensboro, NC (7/7/06) -- Guilford College Director of Athletics Marion Kirby announced the appointment of two new head coaches Friday. Emily Hayes is the Quakers' new head volleyball coach and Jamie LaFollette takes over as Guilford's head men's and women's cross country coach.

Head Coach Emily HayesThe fourth head volleyball coach in school history, Hayes replaces Glenda Dellinger, who went 22-62 in three seasons. Hayes has coached the Piedmont Triad Volleyball Club (PTVC) 17 Team since 2005. She started coaching with PTVC in 2003 and has helped two teams to the U.S. Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships. The Piedmont Triad 16 team placed 28th at the 2005 championships and this year's Piedmont Triad 17 squad finished 17th. Hayes also coaches top high school volleyball prospects with the North Carolina High Performance Team.

A four-year letter winner at Division I Elon University, Hayes became the school's first All-Southern Conference volleyball performer as a second-team selection as a senior. She helped coach Mary Tendler's Phoenix to their first winning season since 1997 and led the team in kills and hitting percentage. Hayes ranks among Elon's career leaders in kills (2nd), blocks (5th) and aces (8th). Her 480 kills in 2003 stand fourth all time and helped her win the team's Most Valuable Player Award.

Hayes earned her bachelor's degree in special education and worked at Asheboro Middle School before coming to Guilford. She played high school volleyball for Dee Hodgin at Asheboro High School and club volleyball with the PTVC and the Central Carolina Area Volleyball Association. She received her Increased Mastery and Professional Application of Coaching Theory (IMPACT) certification from USA Volleyball.

LaFollette (right) becomes the third head coach in Guilford's brief cross country history, replacing Scott Smith, who directed the team in its first two seasons. LaFollette spent the past five years as a cross country and track coach at the Greensboro Day School. He directed the varsity track and field squads from 2003-2006 and won the inaugural Frank M. Brenner Coach's Award in 2005. LaFollette also coached the middle school and junior varsity cross country teams and assisted the Bengals' varsity harriers. Greensboro Day's Jordan Orr clocked North Carolina's 13th-fastest scholastic time in the 800 meters under LaFollette's tutelage. LaFollette worked two years with the Raleigh Junior Striders and helped multiple youngsters qualify for USA Track and Field (USATF) national competitions.

A native of Bloomington, Ind. and 1990 graduate of Bloomington South High School, LaFollette started his college career at Cornell University, but finished at Wabash College. He earned two varsity letters under coach Robert Johnson and helped the Little Giants to top-16 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships finishes in 1991 and 1992. Wabash captured the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference cross country title in both of LaFollette's seasons. LaFollette graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in biology in 1994 and earned a master's degree in genetics from North Carolina State University three years later. He received his USATF Level I coaching certification in 2004.
